“All right you little runts, keep up!”

Karen looked up from the paperwork in her hands, expecting to see Lassiter being tailed by a small assembly of rookies and was stunned to see him walking backward across the main hall leading a herd of kindergarten-aged children. Buzz McNabb trailed at the back of the group, bent over as he worked to keep the last few children, obviously much more easily distracted than the others, from wandering away from the group.

“Who wants to be arrested and put in the holding cell?” Lassiter asked and the children began jumping up and down, waving their arms wildly and shouting, “OOH OOH ME ME ME!”

She was flabbergasted.

“Isn’t he adorable with them?”

Turning, Karen found Polly standing beside her, watching the scene with an affectionate smile.

“He certainly is,” Karen replied and couldn’t help smiling when Lassiter bent, sweeping up one of the children from the front of the group.

“And how would you like to be my partner?”

The little boy cheered.
