Carlton walked into the kitchen early Sunday morning to get a cup of coffee, only to find five-year-old Miranda sprawled on the floor with several pieces of paper scattered around her, some already wet with paint.
“What are you doing, sweetie?” he asked and crouched behind her.
She craned her neck backwards and grinned at him; he caught her arm before a paint-covered hand could find support on his leg. “I’m painting, Daddy!”
Carlton smiled. “I can see that. What are you painting, sweetie?”
Taking her arm back, Miranda put an entire hand into the blue paint, smearing it in an arch beneath red and yellow smears. “I’m painting a rainbow,” she explained.
Carlton squinted at the paper. “There are only three colors though, honey. A rainbow is seven. Or at least six, I mean—”
“It’s not done yet! Want to help finish it, Daddy?”
Nodding slowly, Carlton said, “Yeah, okay, what do you want me to do?”
She caught his wrist in her hand and pressed his palm to the paper over the colors and then pushed, smearing the paint with his hand. Carlton watched in surprise as the colors blended, creating the missing orange and green.
Miranda looked up at him and beamed. “See Daddy, a rainbow!”
