"I didn't know you liked to cook," Parker said to him after The Wedding Job.
Eliot grunted noncommittally at her and focused on the knife in his hand, counting the strokes as he sharpened it on a long strip of leather. "It's a hobby. A man's gotta eat, so I figured I might as well enjoy the process."
Parker kept staring at him in that weird way she always did, nodding. "Cooking makes you happy?"
Eliot's grip on the knife tightened and he shot a glare at her through the strands of hair hanging over his face. "You know, most people don't play twenty questions with me when I've got something sharp in my hands."
Parker blinked at him. "Why not?"
He growled. "Because, Parker. I'm scary, okay? Even without a knife normal people find me scary!"
She shook her head dismissively, shoulders rising in a little shrug. "You would never stab me, Eliot."
Eliot's rhythm faltered.
"You would definitely threaten to," she continued, "but you would never really stab me."
She was right, too.
He didn't think anyone had ever trusted him not to hurt them. He went back to sharpening the knife. "Thanks, Parker," he muttered gruffly.
"You're welcome," she replied blithely and then perked up. "Will you teach me how to cook something?"
Eliot stifled a smile.
