Juliet smiled as she straightened up to see Shawn and Gus approaching her desk. “Hey, guys, thanks for coming, I appreciate it.”

Wow, Juliet,” Gus said even as Shawn was saying, “Hey, sure, no problem, Jules. Anything for—”

His eyes, having finally completed their scan of the bullpen, landed squarely on her and his mouth dropped open, his eyes going wide.

Juliet blushed, despite that being the reaction she had secretly hoped for.

She was wearing her best little black dress, the one that made her feel sexy—irresistibly so—the perfect bright red pumps, her hair curled and falling around her shoulders, and make-up suited for a night on the town.

Shawn recovered quickly, smoothing out his features into a more nonchalant expression and said, “Wow, Jules, you look great.”

Gus nodded, eyebrows raised. “Really, really great.”

She smiled at them. “Thanks, guys. I was just on my way out, but the Chief wanted me to make sure you got these before I went.”

She held out a manila folder and Shawn took two quick steps forward into her personal space, his hand taking the offered end of the folder. Juliet’s heartbeat quickened as he leaned in, mouth inches from her cheek.

I never realized you were a dirty fighter, Jules,” he murmured. Butterflies began rioting in her stomach.

Shawn took the folder and stepped back. His eyes stayed down, focused on the papers in his hands and suddenly it felt like she’d been doused in cold water. She wished she had a huge, ugly trench coat that she could pull over her shoulders and hide in.

Thanks, Jules,” Shawn said, glancing up, and the disappointment she saw in his eyes hurt more than his rejection that night at the drive-in.
